Your Medicare
Timeline

Know exactly what to do — and when — before your enrollment window opens.

Most people turning 65 don't realize how short their enrollment window actually is. Missing it by even one month can cost you for life. This timeline shows you every critical step — from 12 months out through your birthday — so nothing catches you off guard.

The 12-Month Countdown
📬
10 – 12 Months Out
Medicare mail begins
Social Security notifies you. Carriers and plan providers start reaching out. Your mailbox fills up fast — most of it is noise.
📍
Most people are here
7 – 9 Months Out
Research & planning window
The best time to understand your options — before the pressure starts. Compare Original Medicare vs. Advantage, understand Medigap, and figure out Part D. Decisions made here are calmer and better.
📋
4 – 6 Months Out
Sign up for Medicare Parts A & B
If you're not receiving Social Security, you must actively enroll. Do this at SSA.gov or your local Social Security office. Don't assume it's automatic.
⚠️
3 Months Before Birthday
Your enrollment window opens
The Initial Enrollment Period begins. You can now enroll in Medicare Advantage or a Part D drug plan. The clock is running. You have 7 months total — 3 before, your birthday month, and 3 after.
🎂
Birthday Month
Medicare begins — Medigap window is live
Part A and B coverage starts the first of your birthday month. Your 6-month guaranteed Medigap Open Enrollment begins now — no health questions, no underwriting, carriers must accept you. This window does not repeat.
🔒
3 Months After Birthday
IEP window closes
The Initial Enrollment Period ends. Enrolling after this point may result in a permanent late enrollment penalty added to your Part B premium for as long as you have Medicare.
📅
Every October 15 – December 7
Annual Enrollment Period
Once enrolled, you can review and switch plans each fall. Plans change. Benefits shift. Reviewing annually ensures your coverage still fits your life.
💡

Florida Medigap tip

Some carriers in Florida will accept a Medigap application up to 6 months before your Part B start date — locking in guaranteed-issue rates before your birthday. If you have any health conditions, this early window is worth knowing about.

3 mistakes that cost people the most

1
Assuming Medicare is automatic. If you're not drawing Social Security, you must actively enroll — it won't happen on its own.
2
Waiting until the last minute on Medigap. The guaranteed-issue window is your best — and often only — chance to get covered without health underwriting.
3
Confusing the IEP with the AEP. The Initial Enrollment Period is a one-time window tied to your birthday. The Annual Enrollment Period in October is for changing plans, not for first-time enrollment.
