Before you choose any Medicare plan, it helps to know what care actually exists where you live. Not which plan — what's here. Every plan builds its network from the doctors and hospitals already in your area. If a specialty barely exists in your county, no plan can conjure it. And the further you'd travel for care, the more the network rules start to matter.
The Heartland is not one healthcare market. Someone in Lakeland and someone in Wauchula can buy the identical plan and have completely different access to specialists. The commercials never mention that. This page is the landscape — plans are a conversation we can have one on one.

Bartow · Lakeland · Winter Haven
Polk County
Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center anchors the county at roughly 860 beds, and runs the busiest single-site emergency department in Florida. Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital opened in 2026. BayCare operates community hospitals in Winter Haven and Bartow; AdventHealth has facilities in Davenport and Lake Wales.

Most specialty care you'll ever need is inside the county
Tampa and Orlando each about an hour away for anything rare
What it means for your plan: Polk is the one county where a narrower network is unlikely to strand you — there are simply enough providers. Still check your specific doctors, but you have room to maneuver.

Sebring · Avon Park · Lake Placid
Highlands County
Two hospitals, both in Sebring. AdventHealth Sebring is the larger at 171 beds — the county's busiest ER, its only certified primary stroke center, and its only facility performing coronary angioplasty. HCA Florida Highlands Hospital also serves Sebring with heart, orthopedic, and emergency care. AdventHealth runs emergency care in Lake Placid as well.

Thinner here: subspecialty care — advanced oncology, complex neurology, rheumatology, endocrinology. You may find one or two practitioners rather than a department, which matters if you want a second opinion or your doctor retires.
What it means for your plan: Highlands covers common needs well. The real question is what happens when you need something uncommon — and whether your plan lets you go to Lakeland or Tampa without a fight.

Wauchula · Bowling Green · Zolfo Springs
Hardee County
AdventHealth Wauchula — a 25-bed critical access hospital, rebuilt in 2017, carrying a 3-star overall CMS rating and performing well on timeliness of care. There's also an AdventHealth Prompt Care walk-in on Carlton Street open seven days a week, and the county health department on K.D. Revell Road.
Emergency care, general surgery, outpatient rehab, imaging, lab
Thinner here: this is the smallest hospital in the five-county area. Most specialty care simply isn't delivered in Hardee County — expect to travel for cardiology, oncology, neurology, and surgical subspecialties.
What it means for your plan: if you live in Hardee, your real network is in Highlands or Polk, not at home. Sebring is roughly 30 miles east; Lakeland roughly 40 miles north. Confirm your plan covers providers in both directions — some networks are built around one and not the other.

Arcadia
DeSoto County
DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia — an independent community hospital with 32 private rooms, a 16-bed emergency department, and surgical suites. Services include emergency care, surgery, cardio-pulmonary, infusion therapy, radiology, an on-site cancer center, home health, lab, and physical therapy.

Cancer center and infusion therapy on site — notable for a county this size, since some chemotherapy can be delivered without a long drive
Thinner here: specialist coverage is limited, and many physicians affiliated with the hospital actually practice elsewhere — Port Charlotte, Sarasota, or Lake Placid.
What it means for your plan: DeSoto sits between markets. Care flows west toward Port Charlotte and Sarasota, north toward Lakeland, east toward Sebring. That's an advantage with a broad network and a real problem without one — a narrow network can have you driving past three closer hospitals to reach an in-network one.

Okeechobee
Okeechobee County
HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital — a 100-bed acute care hospital serving the county for more than 40 years. It holds Joint Commission primary stroke center certification and American College of Radiology accreditation for CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and mammography.

Critical care — ranked in the top 10% across HCA nationally
Accredited diagnostic imaging
Thinner here: advanced cancer care, cardiology beyond the basics, and most subspecialties aren't local. Many physicians listed as affiliated with Raulerson primarily practice on the coast.
What it means for your plan: Okeechobee's referrals run east to Port St. Lucie and Stuart, not north to Polk. Check that any plan's network includes the Treasure Coast systems — a plan built around Central Florida can look fine on paper and leave you out of network exactly where you'd actually be sent.
How to check before you enroll
Three things worth doing, in this order
Write down your actual doctors. Not "my cardiologist" — the name, the practice, and the location. Networks are built practice by practice, and the same doctor can be in-network at one office and out at another.
Ask about the specialists you don't have yet. Most people check their current doctors and stop. The harder question is what happens if something new comes up. If the nearest in-network oncologist is 70 miles away, you want to know that now.
Know that "accepts Medicare" and "in network" are different things. A doctor can accept Medicare and still be out of network on your particular Advantage plan. Always verify against the specific plan, not against Medicare generally.
Networks change every year. A doctor in network this January may not be next January. That's not a reason to panic — it's a reason to review your plan annually instead of setting it and forgetting it.
